A week of mini DIY: Part 3

This has been the most productive week in terms of mini DIY in a very long time. In fact, I've neglected a few jobs around the actual house as working on mini projects was a much more fun way to spend the Christmas holidays.

One of the tasks I wanted to tackle was the flooring in the Malibu Beach House - something I've been terrified of starting (and getting wrong) for years. I bought strip flooring sheets from Minimum World when they were on sale a while ago but I hadn't done anything with them.

My dad, who has built and decorated the vast majority of my 1:12th scale projects, kindly offered to come over to give me a few pointers so I could crack on with doing it myself.

He spent quite a while showing me how to create a template but it wasn't too long before we both realised I had no hope whatsoever of DIY-ing – there are very few square rooms and plenty of nooks and crannies. 


It was a very time consuming process, probably not helped by the fact that he didn't have much room to work in my dollshouse room. Even after cutting the template to shape, we realised the actual flooring doesn't bend enough to fit around the stairs and walls, so there are going to be more joins than planned.



It took a while, but the first piece of hall flooring is almost in - there's just a little gap to fill around the stairs. It was at that point that we realised what a big job this is so my dad will be returning at some point in the future to tackle the rest. As he said, it's more a job for a professional carpenter than a beginner like me. 


As I couldn't do the flooring, it left me plenty of time to crack on with the external painting and a few other projects, such as making a chandelier. 

I also stained some barewood shelving I bought a while ago - this was the first coat so it does look better now! 


My final project was starting to assemble the shower kit I've had for years. I think my confidence grew over the week and I it suddenly didn't seem so daunting to do a bit of glueing.  


It's difficult to photograph and it won't be complete until I can find some tiles I like for the bathroom walls, but it's well on the way.
 

I think I need a bit of practice with the superglue though 😂

The Christmas village is growing

A few years ago I mentioned we had 'accidentally' begun a new miniature hobby . As this one is seasonal it's a slow burner but our Christmas village is growing little by little, year by year. We still go to a garden centre for the annual post-festive sales and pick up some half price bargains. Amazingly, this year I escaped having only spent £3. This little horse and carriage fitted our specification of 'nothing too big' as storing the village from January to November is a bit of a challenge. The village sits just in front of our TV, largely because it's an empty surface but the fact it's white means it adds to the snowy feel. As you can see, it's still a manageable size - for the moment... We were hoping to pick up a 'firework display' my dad had seen online but unfortunately we couldn't find one. Choo choo - model train time!

Today we took our annual trip to Tonbridge Model Railway Club's exhibition. As it's held less than half a mile from our house, we normally make it every year - and it's worth going as the layouts do change from one year to the next. I must admit this wasn't a vintage show in my book. The actual trains will always be secondary for me but I love the scenery, my favourite setting being the English countryside from times gone by. This year there seemed to be more industrial and urban settings, or (heaven forbid!) those that concentrated purely on the trains and hadn't bothered much with the rest of the layout. That said I did take a lot of photos so will share a few of my favourites. This is close to my favourite type of scene, although it's in a larger scale than I usually prefer. A miniature Christmas

After our successful trip to the Christmas Kensington Dollshouse Festival recently, I was determined to clear out our spare room so I could decorate my house for the festive season. After a few days of very hard work, the room is looking an awful lot better and tonight I was able to deck the halls, as they say. Much like in real life, I'd forgotten quite how many decorations I have... The first job is to get the tree in position although to be honest, it doesn't matter where it goes these days as I don't use the lights. When my dad first built my dollshouse I, for some unknown reason, felt the Christmas tree should have coloured flashing lights - so that's exactly what it has. The socket that connects to the plug on the tree Next year I am hoping to swap the bright lights (although you can actually adjust the brilliance on them as well) for more delicate white bulbs, though I'm not sure quite how easy this will be.
