A week of mini DIY: Part 1

Over the Christmas holidays I was determined to progress my Malibu Beach House - my most recent purchase but a very long-term project. 

I think there are two reasons why it's taken me so long to get to work on it. Firstly, I didn't want to mess it up. I'm not exactly talented when it comes to crafting and DIY, despite my best efforts. I love the idea of having a go, but things never turn out as I picture them. I was also really struggling to decide on the colour for the outside of the house and didn't want to rush into a decision I would regret. 

Secondly, this might be my final miniature project and I want it to last as long as possible. My room for miniatures is tiny, and I can't fit anything else in. I have been eyeing up other places around the house where I might be able to fit a room box, but this is definitely the final house.

Anyway, I eventually decided on black for the accent colour after seeing some beautiful art deco houses online. I had to buy some very fine paintbrushes and the Frog tape definitely came in handy. The result isn't perfect, but I'm very pleased with how it's turned out. 

All I need to do now is find some door furniture to complete the look. 



As I was using gloss paint, there was quite a lot of drying time so while I had all the craft bits out, I started to think about what else I could do. I found the painting really relaxing and it felt like a good use of time while it was freezing outside.

By the time New Year's Eve rolled around, I had several projects on the go (and a glass of wine) and wondered how I would ever have time to go back to work.

The Christmas village is growing

A few years ago I mentioned we had 'accidentally' begun a new miniature hobby . As this one is seasonal it's a slow burner but our Christmas village is growing little by little, year by year. We still go to a garden centre for the annual post-festive sales and pick up some half price bargains. Amazingly, this year I escaped having only spent £3. This little horse and carriage fitted our specification of 'nothing too big' as storing the village from January to November is a bit of a challenge. The village sits just in front of our TV, largely because it's an empty surface but the fact it's white means it adds to the snowy feel. As you can see, it's still a manageable size - for the moment... We were hoping to pick up a 'firework display' my dad had seen online but unfortunately we couldn't find one. The film below is something to aim for next year!

Choo choo - model train time!

Today we took our annual trip to Tonbridge Model Railway Club's exhibition. As it's held less than half a mile from our house, we normally make it every year - and it's worth going as the layouts do change from one year to the next. I must admit this wasn't a vintage show in my book. The actual trains will always be secondary for me but I love the scenery, my favourite setting being the English countryside from times gone by. This year there seemed to be more industrial and urban settings, or (heaven forbid!) those that concentrated purely on the trains and hadn't bothered much with the rest of the layout. That said I did take a lot of photos so will share a few of my favourites. This is close to my favourite type of scene, although it's in a larger scale than I usually prefer. A miniature Christmas

After our successful trip to the Christmas Kensington Dollshouse Festival recently, I was determined to clear out our spare room so I could decorate my house for the festive season. After a few days of very hard work, the room is looking an awful lot better and tonight I was able to deck the halls, as they say. Much like in real life, I'd forgotten quite how many decorations I have... The first job is to get the tree in position although to be honest, it doesn't matter where it goes these days as I don't use the lights. When my dad first built my dollshouse I, for some unknown reason, felt the Christmas tree should have coloured flashing lights - so that's exactly what it has. The socket that connects to the plug on the tree Next year I am hoping to swap the bright lights (although you can actually adjust the brilliance on them as well) for more delicate white bulbs, though I'm not sure quite how easy this will be.
