A pub in progress (part 2)

I think we all know that miniatures make me happy - but they also calm me down and make me relax. The last couple of weeks have been extremely busy both at home and in the office, hence the lack of blogging. While I never get stressed about work (I love my job but nobody will die if I have a bad day - it's not brain surgery), the last few days have been particularly challenging.

We haven't been able to receive any emails at work which meant I didn't open my dad's messages with the latest photos of my pub until I got home. But what a treat it was when I did.

The anticipation - ready for wallpaper

I've asked him to take photos as he progresses and it's lovely seeing this little room take shape. I can't wait to have it back and fill it with all the furniture and bits and pieces I've purchased over the years.

The front of the pub

The front elevation has now been painted and is just as I imagined - the colour is perfect. There's been a lot of discussion lately about the name of the pub (which will always be The Rachel's Return) and how the sign should be painted. Letters have been ordered and hopefully I'll be able to show you them in my next post.

Almost ready for furniture

The inside of the pub is looking amazing - wallpaper, flooring, skirting, coving and lights are all complete. I've always known it would be what I call an 'old man's pub' and I hope that has been achieved with the decoration.

Finally, who can guess what these are? Excuse the photo - taken with a mobile rather than the camera.

    I love the fact that these wonderful little treasures can calm you down when things get stressy at work. Can't wait to see The Rachel's Return return to our house so you can start filling it up.

    Are they door plates, I wonder.

    I love the colour scheme (and I've noticed that it matches this blog).

      Well done, Clare! Known as finger plates apparently. I hadn't noticed that the colour scheme matched the blog until I posted the pictures - it must be a colour I like subconsciously (or associate with miniatures?!)

    Door plates? I did not know doors ate. Are there door forks and spoons?

      I'm not sure door cutlery is necessary :-) My dad's doing a great job - I can't wait to see the next stage.

Choo choo - model train time!

Today we took our annual trip to Tonbridge Model Railway Club's exhibition. As it's held less than half a mile from our house, we normally make it every year - and it's worth going as the layouts do change from one year to the next. I must admit this wasn't a vintage show in my book. The actual trains will always be secondary for me but I love the scenery, my favourite setting being the English countryside from times gone by. This year there seemed to be more industrial and urban settings, or (heaven forbid!) those that concentrated purely on the trains and hadn't bothered much with the rest of the layout. A miniature Christmas

After our successful trip to the Christmas Kensington Dollshouse Festival recently, I was determined to clear out our spare room so I could decorate my house for the festive season. After a few days of very hard work, the room is looking an awful lot better and tonight I was able to deck the halls, as they say. Much like in real life, I'd forgotten quite how many decorations I have... The first job is to get the tree in position although to be honest, it doesn't matter where it goes these days as I don't use the lights. When my dad first built my dollshouse I, for some unknown reason, felt the Christmas tree should have coloured flashing lights - so that's exactly what it has. The socket that connects to the plug on the tree Next year I am hoping to swap the bright lights (although you can actually adjust the brilliance on them as well) for more delicate white bulbs, though I'm not sure quite how easy this will be. A visit to Mouse Town

This weekend we made our annual visit to England's Medieval Festival at Herstmonceux Castle (more for Tim's benefit than mine but it is a good day out). While the majority of the sights and sounds are very much life size, we couldn't resist a visit to Mouse Town. A small tent houses a model - which must be around 1:12 scale - of a street scene in darkness. Amongst the shops are numerous mice, scurrying around and generally enjoying themselves. Mouse Town is home to a large collection of real mice. We've seen Mouse Town before but obviously each time the mice are doing something different so it's always enjoyable, perhaps more for us than others because we love the model. There's something magical about a mouse disappearing through a pub doorway though.
